Workers in Europe and North America fought hard for an eight-hour workday. The 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago inspired this specific date. A peaceful workers’ demonstration turned deadly that day. The tragedy became a powerful global symbol for fair working conditions.
Today, many countries use this date to highlight social justice. Nations promote labor rights and support trade union movements annually.
