United States Dollar Suffers Brutal Retreat Following Massive Inflation Data

Dropping from an 18-Month Peak

The United States dollar suffered a brutal retreat today. The currency fell from its massive 18-month high recently. Higher American inflation data initially fueled this aggressive market movement. However, cautious comments from Federal Reserve officials quickly calmed nervous investors. Treasury bond yields also dropped significantly during the trading session.

European Currencies Execute a Recovery

The euro executed a spectacular 0.3 percent recovery today. The European currency rose to $1.1187. The British pound also climbed 0.2 percent to $1.3224. The official dollar index fell 0.1 percent to 102.06. This index measures the American currency against six major global competitors. The core consumer price index rose 0.3 percent last September.

Shattering Economic Expectations

This inflation rate completely shattered earlier economic expectations. Markets immediately boosted the probability of an October rate hike. However, central bank officials suggested a possible pause until late October. The Australian dollar dropped 0.3 percent after a sudden employment decline. The Japanese yen rose 0.3 percent to hit $157.82. The Chinese yuan also edged up slightly in offshore trading.
