Benfica Defeats Milan While Lyon Overcomes Anderlecht In Europa League

The unified group stage of the Europa League football championship began with exciting matches today. Benfica of Portugal achieved a notable 2-0 victory over their Italian host, AC Milan. Meanwhile, Lyon of France successfully defeated their Belgian host, Anderlecht, with a 2-1 score. These early matches set the tone for a highly competitive European tournament this season.

Benfica Secures A Historic Win Against Milan

Belgian player Dodi Lukebakio opened the scoring for Benfica early in the 16th minute. Polish player Jakub Kaminski later added the crucial second goal in the 53rd minute. This result marks Benfica's first victory over Milan in the history of their encounters. The two famous teams had met on six previous occasions in European competitions.

During those previous meetings, the Italian team achieved four victories and two draws. Milan's past successes included victories in the Champions League finals in 1963 and 1990. Therefore, this away win represents a significant psychological boost for the Portuguese club. Milan will need to quickly evaluate their defensive strategy before their next group match.

In another match, Lyon returned with a valuable 2-1 away victory from Anderlecht's stadium. Danish player Noah Nartey scored quickly for Lyon in the eighth minute. Japanese player Keito Nakamura added a second goal for the French side in the 22nd minute. Serbian Mihailo Cvetkovic scored Anderlecht's only goal later in the 61st minute.

English side Sunderland began their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Dutch visitors AZ Alkmaar. This marked their first continental appearance in 53 years, featuring a winning penalty by Enzo Lo. Bayer Leverkusen of Germany also defeated Celje of Slovenia 2-0 in their opening match.
