Roger Federer says he won’t get bored when he retires from tennis

Tennis ace Roger Federer returned to the top of world tennis on Monday at the age of 36. The Swiss master became the oldest world number one after winning the Rotterdam Open last week.

Federer's rise to the top of the ranking for the first time since 2012 capped what has been a stunning resurgence - he has won three Grand Slam titles in last 14 months.

Federer said that he has no immediate plans to walk away from the sport but conceded that he would not get bored after he retires.

"I'll never get bored," Federer told CNN. "So I'm looking forward to it (retirement) actually."

"I have a great group of friends around me, in particularly my wife and parents are amazing so I always know I'll be fine once I retire and when I'm home."

Federer, however, added that he is in no rush to quit tennis.

"In a way I can't wait for it (retirement), but it should wait for the moment," added Federer.

"Times are great at the moment as a tennis player. These are great moments."

The tennis maestro was forced to take a break from the game due to a knee injury in 2016 and he says that provided him an insight into what life would be after tennis.

"I got a little glimpse into it when I was out for six to eight months in 2016 and I actually enjoyed it a lot," said Federer.

While tennis fans were not surprised by Federer's comeback, he himself could not believe it.

"This one definitely comes very surprising to me because -- getting back to world No. 1, having had the surgery in 2016, and not knowing if I was ever going to win another grand slam," said Federer.

"So this is an incredible comeback for me, definitely my best one ever."

With the Australian Open triumph earlier this year, Federer took his Grand Slam tally to 20, four more than any man. He's now behind Margaret Court (24), Serena Williams (23) and Steffi Graf (22) in the all-time list.
