US Dollar Nears Highest Level This Year Against The Euro
Economic Growth Drives Currency Gains
The US dollar remained close to its highest levels this year against the euro today. The currency is currently on track to achieve its biggest monthly gain in 14 months. Economic growth in the United States and rising US interest rates drive this upward movement. This contrasts sharply with the deep concerns sweeping Europe regarding energy supplies and debt. The euro fell to its lowest level since May 2025, hitting $1.1312 recently. The currency later traded near that mark at $1.1339 during the early Asian session. During September, the dollar rose by nearly 2.5 percent against the European currency overall. The strong dollar also pushed its Australian counterpart below 70 cents for the first time.
Global Markets Under Pressure
Earlier this month, benchmark European gas prices jumped to their highest levels since 2022. French markets remain under intense pressure due to rising national debt and political gridlock. France faces crucial presidential elections next year, adding further uncertainty to the regional markets. The dollar also hit a 16-1/2-month high against the Swiss franc, reaching 0.8358 francs. The Swiss franc weakened partly because investors sought lower-yielding alternatives to the Japanese yen. The Japanese currency lost its appeal following massive yen purchases by Washington and Tokyo. The accelerated pace of Japanese interest rate hikes also impacted the global currency markets. The dollar eventually fell 1.5 percent against the Japanese yen this September.
Anticipating The US Jobs Report
Markets await the release of the core personal consumption expenditures index later today. The Federal Reserve uses this specific index as its preferred inflation measurement tool. However, the global market remains focused heavily on the US jobs report due next Friday. A strong jobs report could easily bolster expectations of another US interest rate hike.
