Bahla Heritage Market Regains Its Splendor Following Extensive Restoration Project

The Governorate of Al Dakhiliyah completed a major historical restoration project recently. They implemented the project to develop and rehabilitate the famous Bahla Heritage Market. The total estimated cost of the project exceeded 477,000 Omani riyals. The extensive work included the complete rehabilitation of 62 traditional market shops. Contractors also developed the surrounding infrastructure, public facilities, and essential market services. This enhances the market’s readiness to receive visitors and stimulates local commercial activity. The project carefully preserved the market's authentic heritage character and traditional architectural identity. It aims to revive the historic market as a premier commercial and tourist destination.

Preserving Authentic Architectural Identity

The project supports traditional and craft activities while providing a suitable environment for business owners. This contributes heavily to revitalizing the local economy and promoting cultural tourism. Engineer Mohammed bin Ali Al-Wardi directs the Projects Department at the Al-Dakhiliyah Municipality. He stated the development included restoring shop facades and improving the pedestrian corridors. The project's implementation strictly maintained the market’s traditional architectural character throughout the process. The development included upgrading electricity networks, improving drainage, and constructing a 150-meter-long falaj. Contractors built parking areas, paved walkways, and created shaded pedestrian paths within the market. They also converted unsightly overhead power lines to safer underground cables.
