In the Sultanate, the cyber extortion cases are rising alarmingly. About 161 cases were reported the Information Technology Authority in 2016. As the victims might have taken the help of volunteer groups or private companies to resolve the problem, the actual figures might be higher as certain cases are unreported due to social stigma as said by Officials. One has to learn to tackle it head on and people should be alerted of the problem. Victims are threatened by cyber extortionists to publish confidential information online or photographs in exchange for money. By scouring in social networking sites, the hunters track down their prey.
To avoid falling in cyber trap measure should be adopted like avoiding conversations with unknown people, ignoring friend requests from unknown people. Use genuine software and install anti-virus programs in your computer. To protect your computer, these steps will help you against cyber criminals. Without virus scan one must not download or open any file from Internet or USB. How to use the Internet responsibly should be taught to Children.
To deal with the hackers, don’t yield to their threats like disclosing bank detail or transferring money. Report the issue to the National Information Safety Centre at ITA (24166828)at the earliest.
