Improving National Literacy And Education Levels

The education sector in Oman continues to show impressive growth. The National Center for Statistics and Information released its latest data today. The population holding a bachelor’s degree or higher increased by 6 percent in 2025. Simultaneously, the national illiteracy rate decreased to 2.25 percent. The government allocated 16.3 percent of total spending to the education sector. This investment directly supports national development goals. The education sector also contributed 4.8 percent to the gross domestic product. Education remains a top priority for the Omani government.

Expanding Early Childhood And School Education

Early childhood education saw several positive developments. Oman currently operates 329 nurseries across the country. These facilities serve over 9,500 children. The Omanization rate among nursery staff increased to 77.5 percent. The number of schools offering early childhood education grew by 7 percent. Overall kindergarten enrollment reached an impressive 75 percent. The general school education sector also expanded significantly. Oman now operates 1,816 schools providing vital educational services. Total student enrollment reached roughly 980,000 across the nation.

Advancing Higher Education And Specialized Training

The higher education sector accommodates over 145,000 enrolled students. The majority pursue bachelor's degrees or equivalent qualifications. The government strongly encourages studies in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Graduates in these STEM fields increased to 33.7 percent. Many Omani students also pursue higher education abroad. Over 9,600 students currently study in foreign countries and neighboring Arab nations. Private institutions now comprise 68 percent of all higher education facilities. The Omanization rate among academic staff also rose to 40 percent.
