Oman has officially submitted its Al Hajar Geopark project dossier to UNESCO. Authorities want the site considered for prestigious Global Geopark status. A Ministry of Heritage and Tourism official confirmed the submission recently. This application marks an important first step in the formal review process.

UNESCO has not yet announced a final designation for the site. Ahlam bint Hamad Al Qasabi announced the milestone on September 21. She serves as the Director of the Heritage and Tourism Department in Al Dakhiliyah. She shared the news during the fifth Omani Geological Heritage Exhibition.

This represents the very first national geopark initiative for Oman.

The proposed geopark covers approximately 5,400 square kilometres of terrain. It spans 11 wilayats across Al Dakhiliyah, North Al Sharqiyah, and South Al Batinah. The government established clear strategic goals for this massive geological project. They want to conserve the unique geological heritage of the region.

Authorities also hope to create new opportunities in education and scientific research. Furthermore, the project aims to drive sustainable tourism that directly involves local communities. UNESCO requires all Global Geopark proposals to undergo a rigorous assessment.

The international body will review the application before making a decision.

UNESCO can accept, defer, or reject an application following their comprehensive review. The Al Hajar site remains a candidate until that specific process concludes. The government hopes this initiative will highlight the stunning natural landscape of Oman.

Geological tourism attracts thousands of international researchers and nature enthusiasts every year. Recognition from UNESCO would significantly boost the global profile of the region.
