Oman set to double tobacco tax

Tax on tobacco will soon be doubled in Oman, senior officials at the Ministry of Health announced on Sunday.

Set to be levelled at 200 per cent, the increase is being made as part of the Sultanate's recently launched National Multisectoral Plan for Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases (NCDs).

Organised in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO), the National Multisectoral Plan for Prevention and Control of NCDs was launched today under the patronage of HH Sayyid Shihab bin Tariq Al Said, Advisor to His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said.

The strategy, which was inaugurated in the presence of members of Oman's State Council as well as Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of WHO, plan aims to lower NCD related deaths by 25 per cent by the year 2025.
