Buyers often experience major sticker shock in Omani bars today. The government introduced a massive 100 percent excise tax in 2019. Locals often refer to this heavy levy as the "Sin Tax."
This tax heavily impacts alcohol, tobacco, and sugary energy drinks. The government uses this tax to boost national revenue significantly. Officials also use it to regulate the consumption of specific goods.
A case of retail beer costs roughly 13 to 15 Omani Rials. However, high-end hotel bars charge incredibly steep prices for individual drinks. Bartenders routinely charge over five Rials for one single drink.
Some premium venues charge up to 15 Rials for a single beer.
