Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Arrives in China for Historic State Visit
Leaders aim to strengthen a 1200-year strategic partnership through massive economic and cultural investments
His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq began a historic state visit to China today. This marks the first time an Omani Sultan has visited the People's Republic of China. The trip represents a massive milestone for Omani-Chinese diplomatic relations. Both nations actively want to elevate their strategic partnership across multiple sectors. Leaders plan to expand economic, investment, cultural, and scientific cooperation. They will focus heavily on renewable energy, green hydrogen, and advanced technology. These modern diplomatic ties actually build upon a rich 1200-year history. Omani merchant Abu Ubaidah sailed to Guangzhou around 750 AD. The famous Chinese sailor Zheng He later visited Oman during the fifteenth century. Modern diplomatic relations officially started back in 1978. The two friendly nations eventually formed a strategic partnership in 2018.
Economic cooperation between Oman and China continues to grow rapidly today. The total volume of bilateral trade officially exceeded 25 billion dollars in 2025. China currently stands as the absolute largest market for Omani exports. Chinese investors increasingly target the Duqm Special Economic Zone. They want to utilize Oman's strategic location and advanced logistics infrastructure. Current projects include the Sino-Omani Industrial City and major national energy transmission systems. The Omani-Chinese Joint Committee actively coordinates these massive international investments. They plan to establish smart warehouses across Sohar, Salalah, and Duqm. Officials also want to finalize a free trade agreement between China and the GCC. These coordinated efforts will surely bring immense prosperity to the Omani people.
The two nations share highly compatible long-term national development goals. Oman's Vision 2040 perfectly aligns with China's massive Belt and Road Initiative. This alignment creates incredible opportunities for mutual economic diversification and digital transformation. Both Omani Ambassador Anwar bin Ahmed Muqbil and Chinese Ambassador Liu Jian praised this synergy. They emphasize that mutual respect drives this powerful international partnership. Educational and cultural exchanges also play a huge role in this alliance. Currently, eight local Omani schools proudly teach the Chinese language to students. Both countries plan to increase scholarships for Omani students attending Chinese universities. They will also establish joint research projects focusing on artificial intelligence. Meanwhile, Muscat recently hosted its very first Chinese Film Week. Omani artists frequently travel to China to share their unique creative works. This deep cultural connection ensures a prosperous shared future for both nations.
