Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani family

Behind The Crown Is A Father, A Husband, And A Grieving Son

Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani was born on June 3, 1980, in Doha. His mother, Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, remains one of Qatar's most recognized public figures. Long before titles and duties, he was simply a young boy growing up in a large royal household.

A Personal Life Built On Family And Heritage

Tamim married his first wife, Sheikha Jawaher, in January 2005. She is also his second cousin, continuing a family tradition. He later married Sheikha Al Anoud in 2009 and Sheikha Noora in 2014. Together, he has thirteen children born between 2006 and 2020, seven sons and six daughters.

His eldest daughter, Sheikha Al Mayassa, now leads Qatar Museums and is known internationally in the art world. Tamim speaks Arabic, English, and French fluently. In his free time, he enjoys badminton and bowling. He also holds a deep personal interest in Qatar's history and cultural heritage.

Carrying Family Responsibility Into National Leadership

Tamim became Emir on June 25, 2013, at just 33 years old. His father, Sheikh Hamad, made the rare choice to hand over power voluntarily. That decision meant Tamim stepped into leadership while still raising a growing family. Balancing national duty with fatherhood became part of his everyday reality.

Under his leadership, Qatar built the Doha Metro and completed Hamad International Airport. He also led Qatar's successful hosting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Behind each achievement, Tamim remained a present figure within his own household.

The Loss Every Son Eventually Faces

On July 12, 2026, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani passed away at 74. For Tamim, this was not just a national event. It was the loss of his own father, the man who once handed him an entire country. The Amiri Diwan confirmed the news, and Qatar entered four days of mourning.

Even leaders known for strength must face personal grief like everyone else. Tamim now had to mourn as a son while still carrying the weight of a nation.

A Nation Wrapped Its Arms Around Him

In the days that followed, thousands gathered at Lusail Palace to offer condolences. Family members, government officials, and ordinary citizens stood together in long lines. Foreign leaders traveled personally to Doha rather than sending distant messages.

Rwanda's President Paul Kagame arrived to pay his respects directly. Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu and Kazakhstan President Kassym Jomart Tokayev also made the trip. US President Donald Trump personally called Tamim to share his condolences.

Love Shown Through Presence, Not Just Words

What stood out most during this period was not the volume of messages. It was the sheer number of people who showed up in person. Citizens who had never met Tamim personally still waited in line for hours. They wanted him to know that his grief was shared by an entire nation.

That kind of support cannot be manufactured through formal statements alone. It comes from years of a leader staying visible and present among his own people.

A Family Story That Continues

Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani built a large family while also building a modern nation. When personal tragedy struck, that same nation treated him like family in return. His story remains a reminder that even powerful leaders carry ordinary human grief. Qatar simply made sure he never had to carry it alone.
