Lebanon and Israel Resume Peace Talks in Washington

Washington hosts the second round of peace talks between Lebanon and Israel today. The two nations meet during an active 10-day ceasefire.

Key Diplomats Join the Meeting

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio joins the crucial diplomatic discussions today. Israeli Ambassador Yehiel Leiter and Lebanese Ambassador Nada Hamadeh Moawad participate actively.

US Ambassador to Lebanon Michel Issa attends the high-level meeting. US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee also joins the important diplomatic group.

The two countries held their first talks on April 14. This historic April meeting broke a long silence lasting since 1993.

Leaders desperately want to end the devastating regional war permanently.

Lebanon Demands a Longer Truce

An official Lebanese source shared specific national demands today. Lebanon will request a one-month extension of the current temporary truce.

The current 10-day ceasefire expires at the end of this week. The source demands that Israel stop its bombing and destruction operations immediately.

Israeli forces must commit entirely to a permanent regional ceasefire.

President Aoun Outlines Negotiation Goals

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun announced ongoing efforts to extend the deadline. He released an official statement through the Lebanese Presidency yesterday.

He bases these upcoming negotiations on completely stopping all Israeli attacks. He also demands a total Israeli military withdrawal from Lebanese territory.

Progress Towards Direct Negotiations

Both countries agreed to direct negotiations during their first meeting. Former US spokesman Tommy Pigott confirmed this important diplomatic agreement previously.

The nations plan to choose a specific time and place soon.
