Uber self-driving SUV kills woman, released footage may impact probe

An incident which could raise doubts about the utility of self-driving vehicles, a deadly collision took place between an Uber self-driving vehicle and a pedestrian in Arizona killing the woman pedestrian. The police on Wednesday released a video of the incident as well.
"The video is disturbing and heartbreaking to watch, and our thoughts continue to be with Elaine's loved ones," Uber said in a statement. "Our cars remain grounded, and we're assisting local, state and federal authorities in any way we can."

According to the video, the vehicle is moving in the right lane of a divided four-lane roadway. The vehicle's headlights are on, suddenly the headlights illuminate a woman directly in front of the car who is crossing the car's lane with her bike. The woman named Elaine Herzberg later succumb to her injuries. The footage of the video also shows the interior view of the vehicle. The driver is at the wheel and appears to look down, and as soon as the driver looks towards the road, he gets suddenly shocked. The video, taken from inside the Volvo XC90 sports utility vehicle that Uber has used for testing may prove handy for investigations of Uber's self-driving car technology and whether it was ready for testing on public roads.
