Oman aerial spraying

Oman Launches Aerial Spraying to Protect Palm Trees

The Directorate General of Agricultural and Fisheries Wealth launched a helicopter spraying campaign today. Helicopters will spray pesticides across the South Al Batinah Governorate.

This rapid three-day response targets the dangerous Dubas palm insect, locally called Al-Mutaq.

Targeting Severe Infestations

The campaign covers roughly 1,800 acres of vital agricultural land. Agricultural teams target several villages inside Rustaq, Awabi, Nakhal, and Wadi Al Maawil.

Officials focus heavily on areas currently experiencing severe insect infestations.

The Threat of the Dubas Insect

The Dubas bug threatens palm tree health significantly during two specific periods annually. Farmers face the highly dangerous spring generation from March until May.

These bugs attack the trees exactly during their crucial flowering and fruit growth stages. The hungry insects directly weaken the trees and drastically shrink the fruit size.

This damage immediately lowers overall farm productivity and ruins market quality.

Indirect Damage and Fungal Disease

The pests also cause massive indirect damage through thick honeydew secretions. This sticky liquid helps harmful fungal diseases spread rapidly across the palm leaves.

It negatively blocks the natural photosynthesis process for the entire tree. The sticky mess also hinders farmers attempting regular pollination and fruit harvesting operations.

Important Safety Guidelines

The directorate urges all local residents to follow the official spraying safety guidelines strictly. Families must completely evacuate the targeted spraying sites immediately.

Farmers must also move all their animals and bees away from the danger zones. Everyone must comply with the approved pesticide use recommendations to ensure the best results.

These careful safety steps minimize side effects and successfully maintain vital agricultural productivity.
