Pakistani mangoes in high demand this season

Mango season is here and Pakistani mangoes are flying off the shelves, as compared to last year, because of their relatively cheaper prices and an increase in the number of suppliers.

Indian mango prices, on the other hand, have remained unchanged for the last three years, according to a central fruit and vegetable market personnel.

“Being the largest retailer in Oman, we calculate the season and look at the quality of mangoes, and when to import them. In terms of sweetness, we start importing Indian mangoes at the beginning of March whereas Pakistani mangoes starts coming in the first week of June.

“The most quantity selling item at a reknowned hypermarket across Oman is Pakistani mangoes especially Sindhari and Langara while Indian mangoes like Alphonso and Badami are in high demand,” a person who works at a hypermarket said.

“This year the prices of Pakistani mangoes are comparatively low as there are a lot of suppliers coming from Pakistan including people owning gardens and private farm houses.

“However, prices of Indian mangoes are controlled and stable for the last three years,” he said.

He added that this year Alphonso mangoes were in short supply due to high demand in the domestic market compared to the demand last year but claims that they have sold a huge volume of Badami mangoes this year.

“Besides Pakistani and Indian mangoes dominating the market, Egyptian mangoes like Mabrooka and Awaise are also in demand as well as Australian mangoes,” the hypermarket employee said.

Another expert from a leading retailer said that Pakistani mangoes are dominating the market across their outlets in Oman.

“We have to agree that this is the Pakistani and Indian mango season so it wouldn’t be fair to compare other mangoes. During the season, Indian and Pakistani mangoes are in higher demand but this year Pakistani mangoes, especially Sindhri, are in more demand. From the Indian options, Alphonso is very popular,” the expert said.

He added that he has also witnessed the influx of more Pakistani mangoes suppliers this year.
