Climate and Weather in Oman

For the tourists who wish to visit Omanor for those who are new to the country, it has subtropical climate as it is a very hot and humid country with a desert climate.Even in the coastal areas between May and August, the summer season is extremely hot. Although right on the coast, it could be unbearably hot in the capital city of Muscat. Over 40°C is the regular reach of temperatures here. As this area is also drier, temperatures in the inland areas could reach in the extreme.

Between the months of December and March which is the winter is the best time to visit Oman usually. While minimum temperatures are often around 13°C, that which is classed as a heat wave in some countries like 25 °C is reached without difficulty in the region.

At certain times, some areas do experience higher levels as throughout the year, rainfall is very low in Oman

The landscape Salalah in the Dhofar region transforms  from dry and thirsty to a lush green oasis complete with waterfalls between June and September as the country experiences monsoons. During this time, heavy fog blankets the hills of Dhofar.Sudden short bursts of Rainfall could cause flash flooding during wintertime often taking the unplanned camper by surprise.

After just one hour of rainfall, due to the fact that there is limited foliage on the mountainsides to break run off, it is not unheard of for whole campsites to be washed away.  A regular occurrence throughout winter also includes the thunderstorms.

Usually from March until August a very strong wind full of dust, The Shamal, blows during spring and summer. The winds could cause sandstorms sometimes as they are so strong.  For foreign visitors, lightweight waterproof clothing is highly recommended during these months.

Where the word ‘autumn’ reminds you of a landscape of crisp golden leaves and just the word ‘winter’ brings thoughts of snow and fleecy lined coats, Oman do not have the seasons clearly defined like the UK or US. The words, hot, hotter and even hotter still could simply categorise the Omani seasons.

With a lightweight jacket for cooler evenings and throughout the year, light dress is recommended.  To wear shorts or tops  that show the shoulders are not allowed for women, no matter how hot it gets. only on the beaches, one piece bathing suits are allowed. Finally, the fabrics, particularly polyester, will be far too hot as cotton and linen will be the best choices of fabrics.
