Annual Indonesian Ceremony Allows People to Dig up Their Dead to Groom and Wash Them

Death doesn’t mean the end.

While most of us would consider burying our dead to be the last we see of them, Torajan people from South Sulawesi, in Indonesia, believe it is just the beginning. In a creepy and disturbing ‘festival’, the Torajans dig their dead, to wash them and groom them—as if they were alive.

Every year, the Indonesian village is literally filled with the walking dead as tribesmen dig up the corpses of their loved ones before parading them around in an annual harvest ritual.

The Torajan people keep their dead mummified in their homes for weeks, months, and even years, before they are buried. And it doesn’t stop after the burial.
