United States Dollar Stabilizes Near 18-Month Peak Amid Global Geopolitical Risks

Quiet Trading Follows American Holiday

The United States dollar stabilized during early Asian trading sessions today. Several American financial markets closed recently for a national holiday. This closure caused relatively quiet trading volumes across international exchanges. However, significant geopolitical risks continue to create massive global market uncertainty.

Tracking the Dollar Index

Investors eagerly await new economic data regarding the US Federal Reserve. They want clues concerning the future path of national interest rates. The official dollar index measures the currency against six major global competitors. This index stood strong at 102.56 points during quiet Asian trading today. The dollar index ended yesterday's trading session up by roughly 0.3 percent.

Energy Costs Support the American Currency

The American currency currently trades near its highest levels since last April. Rising global energy costs heavily support the dollar against other major currencies. Higher United States Treasury yields also attract nervous international investors right now. Meanwhile, political turmoil in the French bond market directly hurts the euro.

Reviewing European and Asian Currencies

The euro held perfectly steady at $1.1159 during trading today. The British pound also remained completely unchanged at $1.3209. However, the dollar slipped slightly by 0.1 percent against the Japanese yen. The exchange rate hit 158.435 yen in early morning trading. The Chinese yuan maintained its highest financial level in four years. The offshore Chinese currency traded steadily at 6.6950 yuan against the dollar.

Pacific Currencies Experience Minor Drops

Finally, Pacific region currencies experienced very slight financial declines today. The Australian dollar fell by 0.1 percent to settle at $0.6956. The New Zealand dollar also dropped by 0.1 percent to hit $0.5582. The New Zealand currency currently trades near its lowest point in 18 months.
