The Gulf state of Oman has a variety of bird species that adds the fine touch to the Country’s ecosystem. A total of 494 species recorded are part of the avifauna (birds of a specific region) out of which 146 were found accidental or rare and five being discovered by humans themselves. In the count of species, the common ostrich is not included as they have gone extinct in Oman. There are twelve species of birds in Oman which fall under the globally threatened category.

Grebes


 

These are the diving birds (freshwater) which are small to medium and large in size. Being good divers and swimmers, they have toes that are lobed. They are quite ungainly on land as they have their feet placed back of their body. Three species out of 19 in total of them are found in Oman.
