Legendary NASA Swift Telescope Burns Up in Earth’s Atmosphere After 22 Years

A Fiery End to a Historic Mission

Gravity finally claimed one of humanity's greatest cosmic observers today. NASA’s legendary Swift space telescope ended its remarkable 22-year scientific career by crashing violently into Earth's atmosphere near Indonesia. The US Space Force confirmed the 1.5-ton astronomical observatory finally succumbed to a rapidly declining orbit caused by intense solar activity. A desperate technical attempt to boost its orbit using a robotic space vehicle failed less than three months ago.

Two Decades of Cosmic Discoveries

NASA originally launched the Swift telescope in 2004 for a brief two-year mission to study gamma-ray bursts and exploding stars. Instead, the resilient machine operated flawlessly for over two decades, observing thousands of violent cosmic phenomena. It played an absolutely pivotal role in determining the exact locations of massive cosmic explosions, giving other observatories the crucial coordinates to study them deeper. While most of the satellite burned up upon re-entry, scientific teams expect a few dense fragments survived the fiery plunge.
