10 Mosques in Muscat That Reveal the Real Character of Oman

7. Sultan Said bin Taimur Mosque

The Sultan Said bin Taimur Mosque introduces fascinating new architectural influences. You will find this beautiful building near the Al Khuwair commercial districts. The architects avoided the traditional, simple Omani design style here.

Instead, they embraced classic Ottoman and Turkish architectural elements. A massive central dome and tall, pointed minarets dominate the structure. Layered arches create a highly complex and visually interesting exterior facade.

Bridging Cultures Through Design

Yet, the builders chose very soft exterior paint tones for the walls. These neutral colors keep the building visually connected to the surrounding city. The mosque never looks out of place among the modern Omani buildings.

A sharp contrast exists between the mosque and the nearby glass offices. This striking difference makes it a highly interesting urban religious space. Inside, the walls feature incredibly detailed, colorful Turkish-style tile mosaics.

The thick carpets feature rich red and blue geometric patterns. We spent an hour admiring the intricate calligraphy painted inside the dome. The natural light creates beautiful shadows across the vast prayer hall floor.
