Top five things to do in Oman’s capital Muscat including the Royal Opera House and diving in the Gulf

From rolling sand dunes to lush desert oases, Oman has plenty to offer the adventurous traveller.

The enticing sultanate on the south east of the Arabia Peninsula may not be as well known as some of its more troubled neighbours, but its a safe and rewarding destination that's well worth a visit.

Just south of Dubai, the capital Muscat is a far more interesting proposition than the notoriously brash emirate.

While the city dates back thousands of years, it’s experienced significant development since sultan Qaboos bin Said came to power in 1970.

Here we look at five of the best things to do when you’re in town.

1. Royal Opera House Muscat

You may not associate the Middle East with opera houses, but this stunning venue is truly world-class.

Opened in 2011 the building is beautiful inside and out, and a prime example of modern Omani architecture.

It hosts a wide range of events from classic music to ballet, and was built thanks to the sultan's passion for the arts.

Huge names like Placido Domingo and Andrea Bocelli have all taken to the stage, which celebrates international and Omani talents alike.

This kind of set-up is frankly a rare thing in this part of the world, and it's even worth a tour if you can't get hold of tickets.

2. Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque

Another relatively recent development, Sultan Qaboos is the main mosque for the country.

Opened in 2001, again at the behest of the sultan it's named after, it can accommodate up to 20,000 worshippers across a 416,000 sq m site.

The main building constructed in Indian sandstone is beautiful, as are the stunning grounds in which it's set.

The centre piece of the main prayer hall is a 21 tonne, hand-woven carpet, the second largest in the world.

Non-Muslim visitors are welcome to tour the site, but be aware that you must dress appropriately which means long sleeve tops and full length trousers.

No visible tattoos are allowed and women should wear head scarves at all times inside the complex.

Don't worry if you're not suitably attired though as Islamic clothing can be provided before entry.
