When people go to Oman, they either choose to go to the bigger cities like Muscat or Salalah but if you want to get a feel for the real soul of Oman, you might want to consider heading north and going to Barka, Oman. This place is currently being slowly developed as a tourist resort area with a new quarter called the Blue City being constructed in Suwadi.

 

Barka is a coastal city in the region Al Bāţinah, in northern Oman. The Population of Barka is 130,000 (2017). The town is emerging as a tourist resort. There is a large fish market and an old souk to explore, as well as the impressive Barka Fort, sitting right on the ocean. Dating back to the 17th century, the fort was built to defend against Persian and Portuguese invaders of that time. From the fort and large octagonal tower, you can get expansive views of the rest of town, the date palm groves below and the blue waters of the Gulf of Oman.

The main reason for visiting Barka, 80km west of Muscat, is to see bull-butting. This is where great Brahmin bulls, specially raised by local farmers, are set nose-to-nose in a push-and-shove that supposedly hurts neither party.
