Nikkei index drop

Japan’s Nikkei Index Falls 3 Percent as Major Technology Stocks Decline

Investors grow concerned about the long-term sustainability of artificial intelligence spending

The Japanese stock market faced a tough trading session today. The primary Nikkei index fell by three percent during early trading hours. Shares related to the semiconductor industry led this major market decline. Global investors show growing concerns about artificial intelligence investments. They question the long-term sustainability of spending on the current AI boom. By midday, the Nikkei recovered slightly to a 2.8 percent loss. Heavy losses in key technology stocks weighed down the entire index. Shares of Advantest plummeted by a sharp 9.1 percent today. Tokyo Electron also saw its stock drop by 5.6 percent. Trading remained highly volatile throughout the entire week. Corporate earnings reports from Japan, the United States, and South Korea fueled this instability.

These varied financial results caused sharp swings in technology stocks globally. In contrast, the broader Topix index saw a milder drop. It fell by 1.3 percent during today's trading session. The Topix remains on track to record a small weekly loss of 0.4 percent. Market participants are also waiting for the Bank of Japan today. The central bank will announce its monetary policy decision later this afternoon. Economists widely expect them to leave current interest rates completely unchanged. Out of 225 stocks on the Nikkei index, 123 saw declines today. One hundred stocks managed to rise, while two remained entirely unchanged.
