Massive Six Day Funeral Unfolds For Slain Iranian Leader

Iran is holding one of its largest public funerals in decades. Millions of mourners are expected across a six day procession this week.

The event honors Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, killed months earlier in an airstrike. Organizers designed the funeral to stretch across five major holy cities.

Who was Ali Khamenei and how did he die?

Ali Khamenei led Iran as supreme leader for four decades. He was killed in an airstrike on February 28, when the US and Israel launched their war against Iran.

Family members died alongside him in the same strike. Their coffins have been displayed together throughout the funeral proceedings.

What is the full route of the funeral procession?

The funeral began on July 4 at Tehran's Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla. Crowds gathered from early morning before the official ceremony started.

The main Tehran procession followed on July 6. It covered roughly 10 kilometers between Imam Hossein Square and Azadi Square.

Prayers moved to Qom on July 7, a major center of Shia religious learning. Ceremonies there took place near the Jamkaran Mosque and the Shrine of Fatima Masoumeh.

The procession then continues into Iraq. Ceremonies are planned in Najaf and Karbala, both significant sites in Shia Islam.

Khamenei will finally be buried in Mashhad, his birthplace, on the last day. Iranian officials estimate between 8 million and 10 million people could attend that final ceremony.

How has Iran prepared for such a massive event?

Authorities converted highways around Tehran into temporary parking zones. Schools, mosques, universities, and sports halls are housing visiting mourners.

The government arranged an estimated 50 million loaves of bread for the funeral. Tehran alone prepared 5,000 mosques and 700 schools to receive pilgrims.

Free fiber optic internet access points were also set up at several locations. Flights have been disrupted, and access to major cities has been tightly controlled throughout the week.

What security measures are in place?

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is overseeing security for the entire event. The Basij paramilitary force is coordinating logistics, accommodation, and crowd management.

Several Iraqi provinces declared holidays to let mourners travel to Najaf and Karbala. Iraqi security forces have intensified preparations alongside Iranian officials for those ceremonies.

Officials are hoping to avoid any major security breach during the proceedings. Foreign dignitaries from more than 50 delegations have attended parts of the funeral so far.

Who has attended the funeral so far?

Foreign representatives from Pakistan, China, and India have taken part in the ceremonies. Pakistan's prime minister was among the senior officials present.

Analysts describe the funeral as both a religious and political event. One Middle East expert called it a display of legitimacy at home and deterrence abroad.
