World Turtle Day 2026

Oman Joins the World to Celebrate and Protect Sea Turtles

The Sultanate of Oman will celebrate World Turtle Day tomorrow, May 23. The Environment Authority represents the country during this important global environmental event.

Officials want to raise public awareness about protecting vulnerable land and sea turtles.

Highlighting Environmental Dangers

Turtles play a massive role in maintaining our delicate ecological balance. The Authority wants to highlight the severe dangers threatening these majestic creatures today.

Pollution, overhunting, climate change, and habitat loss endanger turtle populations globally. This celebration encourages citizens and local institutions to adopt safe environmental practices.

People should reduce plastic use and protect beautiful local nesting beaches actively.

A Major Tourist and Natural Asset

Sea turtles represent an incredibly important natural and tourist asset for Oman. The Ras Al Jinz Reserve provides one of the best green turtle nesting sites globally.

The Sultanate also hosts olive turtles and beautiful hawksbill turtles locally. Masirah Island hosts around 30,000 nesting loggerhead turtles every single year.

Four out of the seven global turtle species nest safely on Omani shores.

Conservation and Satellite Tracking

The Environment Authority protects these turtles by establishing secure nature reserves. Specialized teams monitor the beaches carefully during the busy egg-laying seasons.

Rangers protect the fragile nests from dangerous tampering and hungry predators. The Authority uses advanced satellite tracking devices to study complex turtle migration routes.

This tracking data helps officials develop much more effective marine protection plans.

Educational Campaigns and Future Projects

The government runs engaging awareness campaigns in local schools and coastal communities. Officials teach students how to preserve sea turtles and reduce plastic pollution.

Engineer Aida bint Khalaf Al Jabri works as a marine environment specialist. She explained that nesting seasons vary widely based on the specific turtle species.

The Authority plans to build a two-kilometer natural barrier on Masirah Island soon. This barrier will regulate vehicle traffic and protect the sensitive nesting sites.
