Oman’s 20 Mosques: A Journey Through Sacred Architecture
14. Al Khor Mosque, Muscat
People frequently refer to this historic building as the "Family Mosque." It sits very close to the magnificent, colorful Al Alam Royal Palace. The architecture perfectly complements the nearby pristine royal palace grounds and gardens. It is an absolute must-see building while exploring historic Old Muscat.
Architectural Wonders
Leaders built it originally to serve the immediate, highly secure royal district. Sultan Qaboos renovated it extensively for the Royal Family's frequent personal use. The interior ceiling displays the 99 divine names of Allah incredibly beautifully. The mosque features very unique, highly colorful tinted glass side walls.
The Traveler Experience
Golden Arabic calligraphy decorates the stark white exterior walls highly elegantly. Visitors love photographing the famous crystal chandelier hanging in the center hall. The proximity to the ocean brings a wonderful, refreshing sea breeze.
