An Environment Authority team worked alongside volunteers to clear the hazard.

Divers successfully removed 1,400 metres of abandoned fishing nets near Bimmah Beach. The operation took place after authorities discovered six dead sea turtles there. The animals tragically died after becoming entangled in the heavy discarded netting. The affected waters sit just beyond the coastal town of Quriyat.

Two large nets had wrapped around underwater coral structures near the shoreline. An Environment Authority team coordinated a rapid response to the environmental threat. They worked directly with volunteer divers from the Divers Planet Diving Center. The dedicated team spent several hours clearing the heavy nets.

The divers worked continuously in the water until early afternoon.

Abandoned fishing nets pose a severe threat to local marine environments. This phenomenon is commonly known as ghost fishing by marine biologists. These nets can trap and kill marine animals long after fishermen leave them. Removing the gear from Bimmah immediately reduces the entanglement hazard.

Unfortunately, the successful operation cannot undo the loss of the six turtles. The Environment Society of Oman monitors these specific coastal hazards closely. They list ghost fishing among the primary threats facing Omani turtle populations.

The society regularly conducts net clean-ups ahead of busy nesting seasons.

They also work alongside local communities to raise awareness of the risks. The Bimmah incident clearly demonstrates why recovering discarded gear is vital. It remains a practical part of protecting marine life and fragile coastal habitats.

Protecting these waters ensures the survival of endangered species in Oman. Community volunteers continue to play a crucial role in these environmental efforts.
