Nasser Al Rawahi Earns Oman A Crucial Draw Against Iraq In Gulf Cup

The national team recovered from an early deficit to secure one point.

Oman opened their Arabian Gulf Cup 27 campaign with a hard-fought draw. The national team finished 1-1 against Iraq on Wednesday evening. Nasser Al Rawahi scored a vital equaliser to cancel out an early goal. The Group A match took place at Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Sports City.

The teams clashed under the stadium lights in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Iraq started strong and took the lead in the sixth minute. Mohammed Qasim found open space inside the Omani penalty area. He struck a powerful left-footed shot directly into the net.

Oman faced a difficult deficit for the majority of the evening.

Iraq carried their narrow advantage into the half-time break. Oman emerged for the second half looking for a quick route back. The second period brought a much sharper response from the Omani squad. However, Omani goalkeeper Ibrahim Al Mukhaini still had vital work to do.

He made several important saves to keep the score at 1-0. His teammates continued to press forward aggressively in search of a goal. Al Rawahi finally brought Oman level in the 67th minute.

He struck a beautiful shot after advancing quickly down the left flank.

Iraq came close to regaining the lead later in the half. Aymen Hussein sent a close-range header wide in the 79th minute. Neither team managed to find a winning goal in the closing stages. Both sides start the group stage with one valuable point.

Saudi Arabia and Kuwait are the other two teams competing in Group A. Oman has further opportunities to build momentum as the tournament continues.
