9. Al-Shawadhna Mosque, Nizwa

This incredibly small mosque sits quietly in the ancient Al Aqr neighborhood. Traditional mud-brick architecture defines its ancient, sturdy, and highly resilient walls. The structure lacks a traditional tall minaret entirely, showing early architectural modesty. You will step directly back in time upon entering this quiet space.

Early Muslims established it as a foundational center for deep religious learning. They needed a dedicated quiet space for early Islamic scholarship and teaching. Experts consider it the second oldest surviving mosque in Oman today. The interior mihrab features incredible, centuries-old plaster carvings displaying massive artistic skill.
