WhatsApp Restricted Chat

WhatsApp Tests New Feature to Restrict Linked Device Access to Chats

Enhancing Digital Conversation Privacy

The instant messaging platform WhatsApp is testing an important new privacy feature. The platform wants to prevent linked devices from accessing specific private conversations. This update aims to enhance user control over the privacy of their digital chats. The new feature is officially called "Restricted Chat" internally. It has begun to gradually appear for a number of beta users on Android devices. The feature first appeared during testing in beta version 2.26.36.4. When activated, devices linked to the main account cannot read the restricted conversation. A message will appear explaining that sending and receiving messages is limited.

Manual Activation Required

Messages for that chat are only available through the primary smartphone device. The feature was previously known internally as "Advanced Chat Privacy" during early development. The platform explained that all conversations are already protected by end-to-end encryption technology. The new feature gives the user more granular control over specific sensitive chats. Users can activate the feature manually directly from the conversation information screen. The platform disables the feature by default for all new installations. It is currently available in beta version 2.26.39.11 via the Google Play store. Currently, the new privacy tool works only within individual, one-on-one conversations.

Imposing Specific Chat Restrictions

When activated, the feature imposes a number of other security restrictions simultaneously. It prevents the automatic saving of sent media to the local photo gallery. It also prevents the user from exporting the entire conversation log externally. The feature disables Meta AI features and prevents access from unofficial third-party apps.
